Outstanding loans to SMEs by Chinese banks at the end of 2022 totaled 59.7 trillion yuan (US$8.76 trillion), according to the country’s top banking regulator, China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission. Non-performing loans of commercial banks totaled 3 trillion yuan at the end of December, which was 8.3 billion yuan lower than the previous quarter. The corresponding non-performing loan ratio was 1.63%, lower by 0.02 percentage points compared to the end of September. Meanwhile, the total assets of Chinese banks in local and foreign currencies stood at 379.4 trillion at the end of 2022, showing an increase of 10% year on year.
